What can $15 get you? Well, today it got me a couple of treasures at a local thrift store. When I see old furniture in dark tiger oak I snap it up, and the chair pictured here is my latest acquisition. Incidentally, I just saw a YouTube video from an antique dealer who said that the market for antique wooden furniture is pretty depressed right now. What he is seeing in his shop right now is strong demand for painted furniture. What?! Well, that’s good news for me! I don’t care for the painted stuff. I want to see that beautiful grain! And tiger oak has a rich, dramatic grain that is really lovely. This sweet little chair is in excellent condition and will be perfect…well, anywhere.
Incidentally, that same dealer who said that wooden furniture was selling well said that one antique category that is performing well is postcards! Well, of course! If you’d like to access part of my postcard collection, visit the “Vintage Greetings” page here on Circa 19xx.
The other big story here is the Diana Thorne book, Baby Animals, from 1932. Diana Thorne is one of my favorite illustrators, and her sketch, The Inconsolable, is the centerpiece of the gallery wall in my Springfield living room. This book, which showcases several of her paintings of (naturally) baby animals, isn’t valuable. But I had never seen one in person before, so I scooped it up.
This was $15 well spent!
