Subject: Kansas poem with wheat and corn
Type: Greeting card
Date: Undated
Text: “Where a fertile plain doth rise Westward, ‘neath warm sunny skies, Resembling those of Paradise. That’s Kansas,
Where the sunshine and rain Falling on a fertile plain Produce the best fruit and grain. That’s Kansas.
Where a soft balmy breeze Gently rustles fruitful trees While their owners take their ease. That’s Kansas.
Where the corn is said to burn, While for rain we pray and year, Then later we have corn to burn, That’s Kansas.
Where the Sun, in daily round, Seems to smile as he looks down On country, mart, and town. That’s Kansas. – H.W.S.”
Who is H.W.S? I have no idea. I did a Google search and came up empty. This is kind of a goofy poem, but since I’m originally from Kansas, I have a natural attraction to things pertaining to my home state. This old card was in a pack of similar cards that I purchased at the Wheatland antique mall in Topeka, Kansas.
