Subject: Cherubs
Type: Congratulations card
Year: 1910
Text: “We hear a little cherub has come to dwell with you;
And we send congratulations to you and baby, too.
For nothing else can do so much
to make a home complete,
And add a charm to living,
As a baby, sound and sweet.”
Message: “Well, didn’t you surprise us? We wondered why we had heard nothing from you of late. Not a word since Christmas. By the way, did you ever get those pictures I sent? I did not know you had moved and sent them to the old address. Poor Helen is left alone now. (The rest is indecipherable).”
I’m not sure what to make of this message, but I’m intrigued. It almost sounds like Mr. and Mrs. Burr (the addressees) are trying to ditch the person who sent the card. There’s a story here, certainly. Unfortunately, we’ll never know it; all of the characters are long gone. This message is over 100 years old.
