Have you started working on your Christmas gift lists yet?  I know a couple of people who started Christmas shopping in July and are already finished!   I just can’t think about Christmas in July.  I’m too focused on the sun and the pool to think about short winter days and heavy coats!  Besides, I like shopping for Christmas gifts when the tree is up, Sleigh Ride is on the Bose, and cookies are in the oven.

I purchase most of my gifts online now;  But whether you shop online or in the brick and mortar stores, it can be difficult to find something special and surprising for the people in your life.    Every store seems to have the same things—whatever happens to be on-trend at the moment.  Well, I’ve never been much for trends that come and go.  So, I’ve tried to pull together some unique gift ideas that reflect “Circa 19xx style.”  My hope is that my top picks for Christmas 2017 may provide some gift-giving inspiration and introduce you to a new shop or two.

To shop the page, just click on the  photos of the items you like.  By the way, these are truly my favorite picks from around the Internet.  I don’t get a commission for any sales.

Pysanky: The Prettiest Art Form You’ve Never Heard Of

On a lunch hour not so long ago Ashley Venenga and I were talking hobbies over barbecue sandwiches and sweet potato fries.  I described my new life as a hobbyest blogger—a life that, for people who know me, was just inevitable, given my decades-long love of writing and my more recent history of building amatuer websites.  …

Let’s Go to Kat & Co! A Visit (and some shopping) with Jan Ruoff, Owner of Kat & Co Antiques and Gifts

When you’re driving down Belt Highway in St. Joseph, Missouri, the last thing you expect to see along that busy thoroughfare is an antique shop.  Belt is a congested traffic corridor lined with fast food restaurants (I’ve been told St. Joseph has more fast food restaurants per capita than any town in the world), big …

Ghost Story at Kansas City’s Beautiful Haunted Mansion

It was long before sunrise when the gentleman tour guide at Vaile Mansion in Independence, Missouri stepped to the front door, key in hand.  It would be a long day.  A special champagne reception was to take place at the mansion that afternoon and there was much to prepare.  It was that reception, in fact, …

Five Favorite Finds: A Visit with Susan Robinson

I spent Saturday morning exploring my friend Susan Robinson’s very stylish home, and after a fun visit and a photo shoot of well over 100 pictures, I stepped away from the experience knowing—with perfect certainty—that I had just spent time in the most beautiful bedroom I will ever see.   As I type this, I’m in …

Tootsie Roll Roses: Super Cute and Really Easy to Make!

When I was growing up, Tootsie Rolls were the candy that remained in the Trick-or-Trick bag until the Snickers bars, M&Ms, and Reeses cups were gone.  To me, they were the candy of last resort, a tired brand that had outlived its turn-of-the-century heydey by decades, and a bland taffy that couldn’t possibly compete with …
